Animism is an expression which is often used about the old Sámi faith. It comes from the Latin word anima, which means soul or breath.

It is used to describe religions or comprehensions of the world in which our surroundings are perceived as possessed by spirits or gods. These spirits may be invisible, or they may make their homes in visible elements such as animals, plants, stones, mountains and objects.
